WHAT TO DO

8 LESSONS
You can teach children for their protection.
  1. Honor your own feelings. If someone makes you uncomfortable, even a friend, that is an important signal.
  2. We (your teachers or parents) will be receptive to hearing about any experience you have had, no matter how unpleasant.
  3. It is okay to be assertive, even to defy adults, if you feel threatened. Teenage girls especially need to learn that No is a complete sentence. They do not have to justify it.
  4. Know how to ask for help.
  5. It is okay to scream, to run, even to strike out if you are in danger.
  6. If someone tries to force you to go somewhere, you should yell Help! This is not my father or mother! (Because onlookers seeing a child scream or even struggle are likely to assume the adult is a parent).
  7. If someone says, Do not tell, the thing to do is to tell.
  8. Fully resist ever going anywhere out of public view with someone you do not know, particularly with someone who tries to persuade you.
